Socrates presents concert on April 16:
QuinTango's Greatest Rhythms From the Americas to Europe
On Sunday, April 16, at 7 p.m., at The Lyceum
on 201 S. Washington St., Alexandria, The Socrates Institute,
a non-profit educational organization in Alexandria, will present
"QuinTango's Greatest Rhythms From the Americas to
Europe," a fantastic musical evening and reception of new
and classic tango, to benefit Socrates Institute arts & education
exchange programs. QuinTango, a 5-piece professional ensemble
that recently appeared at the White House and the Kennedy Center,
will be surrounded by the 12-foot mural on display, "Visions
of Alexandria: Past, Present, & Future," painted by
Alexandria children in an interdisciplinary educational program
sponsored by The Socrates Institute. Tickets: $25. For reservations,
call 301-423-5250, or email: info@socratesinstitute.org.
Alexandria's Mayor Kerry Donley, State Delegate Brian J. Moran,
and Deputy Cultural Attaché of the French Embassy
Dominique Malicet are special guest officials for the evening.
This concert and reception welcome a 24-member international
delegation from Caen, France, Alexandria's sister city. The
delegation consists of French businesspeople, college students,
and young members of the International Fencing Federation, in town
for 10 days to perform sword and saber demonstrations. (itinerary
available upon request) At the same time, fourteen students from
Minnie Howard School will travel to Caen April 14-22 with French
teacher and local Alexandria-Caen committee member Gregory Jones;
they will be housed in French families, and will visit historic
sites in Normandy.
In July 2000, ten citizen members from the Alexandria-Caen Exchange
Committee will travel to Caen with The Socrates Institute's "Visions
of Alexandria..." mural to help celebrate Bastille Day in
our French sister city. The mural will be on display at Caen's
city hall during the week of the July 14 celebrations. Future
exchanges between Caen and Alexandria include Youth Internships
and Homestay visits, currently being arranged for students interested
in spending a few weeks abroad to perfect language skills and experience
the culture of their sister cities and countries.
